This activity gets students walking around your outdoor space putting themselves in the shoes of a chosen animal. They’ll think about what that animal might be able to see, hear and feel. It’s a great introduction to diary writing that can be used as a stand alone activity or the lead up to a big write. It also links in nicely with your habitats topic.
Teaching Structure:
Explain to the students that they are going to go outside and find an animal. It could be anything from a tiny insect to a big bird.
Tell them that they’re going to imagine they are their chosen animal and think about what that animal might see, hear, and feel. At this point it could be useful to choose one animal to go through together.
Get them to go off and complete the differentiated sheets.
After 15 - 20 minutes get them to come back and share what they’ve done with each other.

Vocabulary Included:
- conductor
- circuit
- insulator
- symbol
- electricity
- component
- voltage
- amps
- battery

How to play: Distribute the cards to your students. Some students may get more than one card.
Select a student to begin by reading their card aloud. (example: I have the bulb symbol. Who has who has the symbol for a buzzer?) The student who has the card with the correct answer to the previous student’s “Who Has...” question reads their card aloud. And so on.
Students must listen for their turn and try not to break the chain. When the chain circles around to the first student, the game is over.
If playing individually or in small groups, these cards can also be used as dominoes.

The space map is a great cross-curricular activity to get children to think about the size of the planets in relation to each other as well as the distances between them. Get children to create a line of planets using the planet sizes table by drawing them on chalk on the playground. If space is limited it is good to do the sun as a whole class due to the massive size! As an extension you can get the children to write in between each planet the distance it is away from the sun as well as any fun facts they can think of or find out.
This pack contains two planet sizes sheet; one with decimals and one without.

For this activity students will be set the challenge to lift their partner off the ground without touching them using a set of materials provided. The idea is that they’ll create some kind of lever so they can stand on one side of the plank of wood and lift their partner on the other.
Our suggested teaching structure:
Planning sheet: 15 mins Building their lifting device: 20 mins Evaluation sheet: 15 mins This activity works best if students are left to produce their own designs and figure things out for themselves, however if by the end of the session, not all the students have figured out how to lift their classmate by using a lever, get some students to demonstrate and begin to explain how it works.
Resources per group:
Activity pack
Planning sheet
Evaluation sheet
Plank of wood
Log / pipe (something to wrest the lever on)

This video comprehension takes a look at the ozone layer and its depletion. What is video comprehension?
Our video comprehension series is designed to facilitate the learning of those students who find reading tricky. It allows them to access the same level of learning without the need to read large amounts of information as they will watch a video on the topic rather than reading large amounts of text. We have found it especially helpful with our SEN students.
Each set is differentiated three times. With the first level of differentiation requiring them to simply circle the correct answers.
These worksheets work best if each student has their own device as they can re-watch parts of the video to find the correct answers. However if you don’t have one device per students or pair we have done this with great success by having the video on repeat on the board / tv at the front of the classroom.
These activities are also perfect for home and distance learning.
We are constantly expanding our range of video comprehension worksheets so be sure to check back frequently for new resources.

This outdoor STEM challenge gets students working as a team as they explore your forces and motion topic, with a focus on gravity. They will be set the challenge to transport water from a bucket at the top of a hill / set of stairs to the buckets at bottom using only a bucket and length of hose.
Once they’ve completed the activity they can fill in the evaluation sheet which gets them to think about the effectiveness of their method as well as how they worked together as a team.
Set Up:
This activity works best in teams of 3 or 4. For each team you need 3 buckets and a length of clean hose. Find a hill (or set of stairs (however space can be an issue here) and place one bucket full of water at the top and another at the bottom for each team.
The students can not touch either of these buckets.
Their challenge is to transport the water from the bucket at the top to the bucket at the bottom without touching either of the buckets. They must only use the third bucket and the hose to transport the water. You will see lots of weird and wonderful ways that the students come up with to do this.
The idea is for the students to develop a siphon by placing one end of the hose in the water and the other in the empty bucket, sucking until the water reaches the high point in the hose, and then letting gravity do the rest. If by the end of the activity the students have not used this method to transport the water, show it to them and encourage a discussion as to why it works.
Resources Needed Per Team:
3 buckets of the same size
Hose (1 - 2 meters long)
To make things more interesting you could also add more objects they can use that won’t be as effective, such as a sponge.
